Working for a Cmprehensive Solution.

America's people of faith have witnessed how our country's broken immigration system has separated countless families and compromised the dignity of millions of decent people.

That witness inspired the Gamaliel Foundation, JOB's national network to launch its Civil Rights of Immigrants campaign, whose goals are to enact just, humane and common sense policies that affect immigrants locally and win Comprehensive Immigration Reform nationally.

In response to this reality, JOB has been an integral partner here in San Diego working with many local, state and national community based organizations on advancing pro- immigrant policy. In 2010 and 2011, JOB partnered with San Diego DREAM Team and California Reform Immigration For America table to advocate the passage of both the Federal and California DREAM Act . JOB accomplished this via organizing, letter writing campaigns, phone banking events, prayer vigils, legislative visits, and other education forums.

Our Victories

  • In January 2010, JOB worked with local Haitian Community in response to the earthquake and on Temporary Protected Status

  • In preparation for the Fall and Winter 2010 House and Senate votes on the Federal DREAM Act, JOB partnered with the San Diego DREAM Team, a coalition of DREAMers and Allies at college and university campuses across the County; together, we organized numerous phone banks to generate calls to the White House and the Senate, held a vigil at Mesa College, and organized 5 simultaneous vigils on bridge overpasses across San Diego County. JOB received coverage from every TV station and major newspaper in San Diego, and even made the New York Times!

  • During the 2007 San Diego County wildfires, JOB mobilized 80 bilingual advocates to translate and monitor the treatment of people of color in shelters throughout the County and insure that their civil liberties were being respected.

  • San Diego's largest protest since the Viet Nam war took place Sunday, April 9, when up to 100,000 people jammed the streets to denounce the anti-immigrant bill passed by the House of Representatives and demand "dignity, respect and hope" for both documented and undocumented immigrants. The march was inspiring and festive, but the rally speeches were long on emotional tales of immigrants making good in the U.S. and short on specific demands. Some immigrant-rights activists had criticized the march organizers for not specifically calling for amnesty for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants currently in the U.S., and had held their own action the day before.

  • We are able to use our Annual Fiesta del Sol San Diego, which is attended by over 70,000 people, as a vehicle to promote education and advocacy for the Comprehensive Immigration Reform and DREAM Act.

  • As a result of our organizing on Comprehensive Immigration Reform and with other organizations on the DREAM ACT, we developed JOB's Civic Participation campaign to promote naturalization of permanent residents and voter registration and partcipation of immigrant low propensity voters since 2007.
