Membership FAQs

JŌB is primarily an institutional membership organization. This means that faith, community, labor and or academic institutions may join the organization as institutional members. In the fall of 2007, the JŌB Board amended the organization’s bylaws to allow for the creation of an Individual Member Caucus. This creates the opportunity for individuals that are not part of an institution to live out their personal community values by joining the organization as individual members and participating in the various issues task forces.

Some congregations join JŌB because they know of our work to strengthen congregational ministry. Community Organizations and or University Departments join the organization because of their commitment to live out their institutional mission/vision of community leadership, engagement and social justice.  Before envisioning themselves as active in the public arena, these congregational leaders know that they have to “get their own house in order” in some very basic ways.  JŌB provides training and resources for launching and following through on successful Congregational Development Campaigns,

JŌB creates opportunities to build relationships across race, faith, gender, and geographic lines in San Diego County.

JŌB creates a united voice that can impact issues of concern in our communities.

JŌB creates excitement, challenge and support that will inspire ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Membership Benefits

Relationship Building: Most members of congregations/organizations may be able to greet one another but know little about the lives of their fellow members. Because they are not in relationship with one another, they cannot claim a shared vision or set of values. Faith-based organizing create the opportunity and strategies for intentional and intensive relationship building within the institution, with other community institutions and with the communities your institution wants to serve. Building relationships among people creates dialogue, common vision, willingness to work together, joy, and a sense of community.

Leadership Development: Leaders must be developed and should have a following. JŌB offers local and national trainings on leadership development and community organizing. The skills and strategies learned are used to address justice issues and to strengthen the congregation/organization. Leaders are trained to lead, to understand the interests of others, and to build collective strategies to meet the interests of all those involved.

Development of Lay Leadership Core Teams: Core Teams of 10 to 20 leaders are created in each member institution. They build relationships with one another and learn about each others values, visions, and ambitions. Leaders recruited into the core team create ways to respond to their vision and ambition whether it is a community issue to be addressed or a ministry to be developed. JŌB works with each congregation or organization to expand the core team and encourage full participation in life of the congregation or organization.

Engaging in the Public Arena: As a vital member of a community, a congregation or a community institution must be able to effectively respond to the problems and pressures its people experience daily. JŌB is a vehicle for community institutions to influence the public life of their communities by enabling its members to seek collective solutions to community issues. This leads to tangible community improvements and increases the congregation’s sense of belonging to a healthy, self-determining community.

What are the commitments of a member?

  • Two representatives from your organization/congregation serve on the Board of Directors, which meets on the first Wednesday of every month.
  • Commit to holding a listening campaign to learn about the concerns in your own congregation or organization and strengthen relationships.
  • Build a Core Team in your organization/congregation that will work to strengthen your congregation/organization and connect the work of JŌB to the rest of your institution. (This is often an existing group within an organization/congregation.
  • Essentially, you will get out of JŌB what you put into it.
  • Member organizations/congregations pay dues. Upon joining JŌB, partial payment should be made. (No congregation will be denied membership because of financial constraints.)

  • How do we become a member?
